Dr. Howland, born and raised on Boston’s North Shore, received his B.A. in Psychology from Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont. He earned a Master of Social Work from Boston University. Later, Jim returned to Boston University and completed a Doctor of Education in Counseling Psychology, specializing in Sport Psychology. He has worked for over 20 years as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker. Previous employment has been in hospital, outpatient, community mental health and school settings. In addition to his private practice, Jim is a staff counselor in health services at Merrimack College in North Andover. Dr. Howland enjoys working with adolescents and adults. He offers psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, and families. In addition, he provides sport psychology services. Dr. Howland has a strength-based, motivational, and cognitive-behavioral approach. He also has training in mindfulness-based stress reduction. He has special interests in helping people dealing with anxiety, depression, mood, and substance abuse disorders.
